1) Social Media, I Love It!
My experience with social media is more personal than professional. I’m a blogger, a frequent Facebook user, and I have accounts on LinkedIn and Twitter. Since I am away from my country, I use Facebook primarily to get in touch with those who are far away. But, actually, my biggest involvement is with my blog, “Livre e Leve em Seattle” (in English it means “Free and Light in Seattle”): http://eulivreleve.blogspot.com/.
I created the blog 9 months ago, when I moved to the United States, in order to tell those who are in Brazil a little bit of my experience in this country. Among the topics discussed are tourism, advertising references, photography and eating healthy, things I really love. The blog allows me not only to maintaining contact with my friends and relatives, but also helps many Brazilians who are also here, providing information and tips about living abroad.
In addition, I had the pleasure of writing as a guest for the blog “Preview”, that belongs to a journalist and social media enthusiast. The subject was “Word-of-web” and fortunately this will be much discussed in our course. Here is the link to my post: http://melissadeandrade.com/preview/2011/11/11/the-word-of-web/. I hope you like it!
2) They are not interacting yet!
As a new United State’s resident and married to a “beer lover”, the first local business that came up in my mind was “Mac & Jack’s Brewing Company”, located in Redmond and the 39th largest craft brewery in the country (by volume sold).
Surprisingly, after some research on web I was shocked: they are not using Facebook and Twitter as a channel to maintain contact with their consumer!! On Yelp “Mac & Jack’s” has 45 reviews, and these reviews are really positive. Good sign, isn’t it? However, the most amazing “good review” is on Facebook: a “Mac & Jack’s” lover, who doesn’t work for this company, created a page to interact with another people that love the company too. The page has 6.255 likes!!! It is a strong sign that these Facebook users want to talk to this brand, and it’s time to start a real interaction!
The consumer has important things to say and probably want to hear from “Mac & Jack’s”. Not only is extremely important hearing opinions, suggestions, criticism, compliments and needs, but also, it’s important to have a conversation. I believe tools like Twitter and Facebook could be a great start point to using social media to its fullest advantage.
